Version 1.11 was released recently, with standard installers available for both Windows and Linux (and a special installer for Mac).There’s an older version of gvSIG as part of Jo Cook’s Portable GIS. If you have a retail copy of Windows 7 (many machines come with "oem" versions that are tied to that machine) you can install it on a free VM like virtualbox. Noondueler, this might be a bit much if you don't know what a VM is, but one route is to follow these instructions to get a copy of XP running on a VM, and then install Topo! on that. The FREE Standard Maps are available on a dedicated site, here. If you require maps for other countries, or more detailed maps, please look at my TT HD Topo maps, which are only available to purchase or via a paid subscription. Also realize that none of the Topo maps are 'routable'. This category lists the SAMPLE TT HD Topo maps I offer. And the National Parks 24k only covers selected parks, not the whole region whereas the US Topo includes everything (although the roads are getting pretty out of date). How does one download MapSource software on an eTrex Legend to upload Topo maps MapSource software necessary to upload maps can be downloaded from the Garmin website. This will need to be repaired by Garmin who charges a flat repair fee of 79.
I get that desktop software is a shrinking market, but it seems like they're 5+ years early with this decision, and it's absolutely puzzling that they didn't develop a suitable online alternative before killing off their desktop product. The device appears to suffer a hardware fault.
I didn't say anything because it's hard not to venture into a rant about this huge WTF from nat geo.
